The remnants of the old walls and city tower are a reminder of the era of the Dukes of the family Frankopan whose four hundred year rule left deep spiritual and material traces in Vinodol. Bribir experienced its greatest growth during the reign of Duke Bernardin Frankopan who fortified the castle and city walls. When feudalism was abolished in 1848, the Bribir municipal authorities pulled down the Vela and Mala gates and castle and a school was built in its place. So it was that the long and glorious history of the Bribir fortress ended in ruins. The only remnant of the Bribir fortress is the quadrangular tower built in 1302 and part of the old walls. A clear view of the valley and Novi Vinodolski is offered from atop the hill on which the old town is located.
