Ciovo is an island in the central Dalmatian archipelago connected to land with a draw bridge. The bridge between land and the island is situated next to the historical town of Trogir. KRK, an island in the Kvarner Archipelago, the largest island of the Adriatic Sea; area 409 sq km (38 km lenght, width up to 20 km); population 16,402. North of the narrow part at the line Vrbnik - Punat spreads the lower, forested, more fertile and populated part of the island. The higher, southern part, is predominantly bare, interspersed with thick forests. The Baska Cove cuts through the limestone plain, ending in the Gulf of Baska. The highest peak of the island, Obzova (569 m), lies in the southern karst region. The rocky, steep and predominantly bare north-western coast is neither developed nor easily accessible, and represents a danger when the bura blows. The south-western and south-eastern coasts are well developed. The name of the island is derived from latin - Curicta, because the island was inhabitated even in ancient and prehistoric times, with the Ilyrian tribes Japods and Liburnians being the first inhabitants of this "Golden Island" - "Insula Aurea". This name was given to the island in antique times because of its ability to provide abundantly for its inhabitants and guests. Speaking of antiquity, the two towns of the period were in todays Krk and Omisalj, or as the romans named them - Curicta and Fulfinum. A historical naval battle occured between Caesar and Pompei in the vacinity of the Krk bridge, in the bay now called Voz. Island of Losinj is an island at the very west of Kvarner bay. It is one of the smaller island in the archipelago, divided from larger, Cres, by a small passage, connected by bridge. MLJET, an island in the southern Dalmatian archipelago, south of the Peljesac peninsula, separated from it by the Mljet channel; area 100.4 sq km; population 1,237. PASMAN, an island in the Zadar archipelago southeast of the island of Ugljan, separated from it by a narrow strait called Zdrelac; area 56.9 sq km (length 21.1 km, width up to 4.1 km); population 3,349; highest peak Bokolj (272 m). In the west the island is composed of Cretaceous limestone, in the east of dolomites, with a small zone of fertile sandy deposits. The limestone zone is partly covered with underbrush, while the dolomite and sandy zones are under vineyards and vegetable gardens. Plitvice Lakes are composed of 16 interlinked lakes between the mountains of Mala Kapela and Pljesivica in the region of Lika. The whole area is on certain maps called the Devils Garden, due to its landscape and history. According to the legend the Plitvice lakes were created after a long period of drought. People, animals and nature were longing for water, even the Black River went dry. People prayed and prayed. Then appeared in the valley the Black Queen with her magnificent suite; a strong wind begun to blow and with a thunder rain fell down on earth. The rain was falling until the water had grown enough to create the Lakes. The lake system is divided into the upper lakes and the lower lakes. The highest of them is Proscansko Lake (639m) and the lowest is Novakovica Brod (503m). The upper lakes, surrounded by thick forests and interlinked by numerous waterfalls, lie in a dolomite valley, while the lower lakes, smaller and shalower, surounded only by sparse underbrush, lie on the limestone bedrock. The lakes receive most of their water from rivers called Black River and White River. After the waterfall Sastavci on the lower lakes, the lakes water continue to the Korana river and the Plitvice brook, which falls from an elevation of 76m. Cliffy rocks around the lakes and along Korana comprise 14 caves in limestone and 6 caves in travertine.Climate is alpine. The water temperature in Proscansko lake and Kozjak reaches even 24°C in summer. The whole region is coverd with snow from November till the end of March; the lakes are frozen in December and January offering a magical view on the winter landscape.
